Shopping for Individual Health Insurance

individual health insuranceShopping for individual health insurance can be a tedious and tiresome task.

To comparison shop for health insurance, a person must be willing to take on a seemingly impossible task. There are thousands of companies that want you to buy medical insurance from them. It's even more complex because each plan has different expenses, deductibles and other large and small details. If you are feeling lost in the health insurance maze, these points may help you find your way out.

However, before we begin, its very important that you read all contracts for two reasons:

  • There are many unscrupulous people in the insurance agency that will flat out lie to get your business (but this is much less likely if you choose a company with an A rating or higher at both AM Best and Standard & Poors.)

  • Even honest and hard-working agents make mistakes since there are so many different policies and options that it's very difficult cover everything in a policy. Ultimately, it's your responsibility to know what is in the contract.

The Premiums You Pay Each Month

There is a major cost associated with a medical insurance. There is always a premium, or monthly cost. Customers pay this premium every month, whether they use their insurance that month or not. When you receive a policy offer for health insurance, it should clearly state the monthly premium. Make sure that you read the entire policy and ask any questions that you might have.

The Costs of Making A Claim

There are often additional costs associated with receiving medical treatment. There may be a fixed cost associated with each doctor or hospital visit. Alternatively, the amount you pay may be a percentage of the total costs. The costs you incur may vary with the care received, the service provider and other factors. Make sure any medical insurance you receive clearly lists these costs.

Consider Your Deductible Costs

With many individual health insurance plans, benefits do not begin until you pay a certain amount first. This amount is referred to as a deductible, because the insurance provider deducts it from the amount they pay. You can often choose between higher deductibles and lower premiums. Ensure that the deductible is plainly shown on your medical insurance.

Out of Pocket Costs

Your individual health insurance may not cover the full amount even if you have paid your deductible You may be required to pay a small percentage of the deductible expenses. Depending on the terms of your policy, this amount can be 20 to 30 percent of the total costs. Your health insurance should state these out of pocket costs, and you need to understand them completely.

Out of Network Treatment

Some insurance plans will offer a higher benefit to patients if they use doctors recommended under the terms of the plan. The recommended doctors make up the plan's network It is therefore advisable to use only doctors who are listed as part of the network. That is not always possible, however, if you are traveling outside your network area. Therefore, check your medical insurance to find out if there are differences between in and out of network doctors.

Shopping for health insurance can be a confusing and exhausting task. But, if you ever have a medical emergency, you may save yourself a lot of money by taking the time to do it. The best way to compare plans from different companies is to get a medical insurance from each one. Your comparison should include all of the issues listed here, as well as any other costs and details that arise. If you follow these steps, you will be ready to select the individual health insurance plan that works for you.

Pick A Top-Rated Insurance Company

Important point, there are many unscrupulous insurance agents out there that give the industry a bad name. So, be sure to read the entire police yourself. While the agent is required to inform you about everything in the insurance policy, there are two problems with this:

  • The unscrupulous insurance agents out there will out and out lie to you about different options. And while this is illegal, it's almost impossible to prove in court let alone extremely difficult to deal with when you need help.

  • There are so many different policies available and even more policy options that there are thousands of variations for each company. So, even the most knowledgable and honest agent may have difficulties letting you know about everything in the policy. Plus, if the agent honestly forgets to mention something in the policy, it's your responsibility to uncover it.

However, if you choose a top-rated company at one of the rating companies such as AM Best or Standard & Poor's, you will avoid almost all of these problems.
