Choosing Your Vision Insurance Plan... Do's and Don’ts

vision insurance planToday it is estimated that about half of all Americans either wear prescription eye glasses or contact lenses. Over time, the costs for your vision needs can get quite expensive, which is where a good vision insurance plan comes in handy. With the right insurance, your eye exam, glasses and even contacts can be covered without you having to pay for them out of pocket. Even if you end up paying for this type of insurance out of pocket, it’s still a worthy investment.

It’s important that you understand that a vision insurance plan is not like general health insurance and vision needs aren’t covered by most health insurance policies. This is a type of insurance that will either offset the costs of your vision needs or provide what you need at a discounted price. There are different types of plans out there to choose from, so you’ll need to pick the plan that’s right for you. So, let’s take a look at some of the do's and don’ts of choosing your vision insurance plan.

Do – Look for a Plan that Meets Your Needs – One of the first things that you need to do when you are looking for vision insurance is to look for a plan that meets your needs. There are many different types of plans available to you. You can choose to either go with a vision benefits package or a discount vision plan. Usually the benefits package is a lower cost option; however, it may only pay for the benefits a few times per year. You’ll find that the discount plans allow you to get the benefits all year long, but you have to pay a certain amount each time you visit.

Do – Go with a Plan that Saves You Money – You also will want to make sure that you go with the vision insurance plan that will save you money. Usually these plans are not really all that expensive, but you will want the plan that will be most cost effective for you in the long run. Some plans require up front membership fees each year, others require co-pays, and some only offer you discounts. So, you have to take all of this information into consideration and then decide which option is going to offer you the best deal.

Do – Look for Plans that Offer Extra Value Services – It is also important that you do look for plans that offer you extra value services. There are a variety of services that are considered to be extra value. They include progressive lenses, polycarbonate lenses, high index lenses, blended segment lenses, photosensitive lenses, polarized lenses, scratch resistant coatings and even ultra violet coatings. There are many plans that do not cover these extra services, so if you can find one that does, it’s a great buy.

Do – Take the Time to Compare Prices – No doubt you want to make sure that you get the best price possible, so you’ll want to take the time to compare the prices of vision insurance plans. Many times taking the time to make comparisons can really help you save a lot of money. Be sure that you not only compare prices, but you should also take the time to compare the coverage options as well so you get a good deal for the money that you are paying.

Don’t – Purchase the First Plan You Find – Many people make the mistake of purchasing the first vision insurance plan that they find, only to find out that another plan would have been a better option. This is why it is so important to compare different plans, what they cover and the price that it costs. This way you avoid having buyer’s remorse once you make your vision insurance purchase.

Don’t – Go with a Questionable Company – You definitely want to avoid going with a questionable insurance company when you purchase your vision insurance. Take the time to check out the companies that you are considering before you make your purchase. It is important that you make sure that you go with a company that has a great reputation and a company that is financially secure as well. And be sure to compare the companies at places like AM Best and Standard & Poor's. After all, what good is a vision insurance plan if the company doesn't pay you on time or goes out of business?

Don’t – Forget to Find Out What Basic Services are Offered – It’s important that you make sure that you know what basic services are offered before you purchase your vision insurance plan. You’ll find that most companies will include the basic services like an eye exam, including dilation, eyeglass frames, a pair of lenses, contacts, and in some cases they may help cover LASIK surgery a swell. However, this can vary from company to company, so be sure to check this out before making your final decision.

As you can see, there are definitely a lot of things to keep in mind when you are looking for the right vision insurance plan. You want to be sure that you get an excellent plan that you can count on when you need it. Also, making sure that the plan is cost effective is very important. So, make sure that you keep this list of dos and don’ts in mind when you are looking for the right plan for your eye insurance needs. They’ll help you make sure that you do the research so you pick out the best possible vision insurance plan for your needs.
